Rolling his eyes, the smaller demon stuffed out the cigarette on the edge of the bench and then regretted it when it left his hands free. "Come now, when has it ever been my job to resist temptation?"

Roderich surveyed him for a long moment, "Not for a very very long time." As soon as he said it he wanted to retract it.

For a moment Memphis' face twisted, and he fell silent. "You're right, not for several thousand years now."

The seraph sighed, "I...didn't mean that the way it came out. I am sorry, Memphis." He knew better. He'd known better for centuries. What was he thinking?

There was another pause and the smaller demon shrugged. "We all make choices, don't we? I made mine, you've stuck with yours." He started fishing around for another cigarette though.

"I suppose that's true, and it's not really our place to question one another's choices, is it?" He traced the edge of his violin case with a quiet sigh.

"Well," he said with a smirk. "It's technically my place to question everyone's choices since I suppose I should see about this recruiting bit... but I'm more than willing to leave that alone," he added with a huff.

Roderich smirked a bit at that, "And you've tried that in the past, remember? It doesn't work. I'm quite content with my current position."

"Oh please," Memphis scoffed. "I barely tried when I did. But yeah, yeah, I know, content and all. Strangely so, but I guess to each their own."

Roderich chuckled at that, "To each his own indeed. I like what I do and where I'm at. Sure there are occasional downsides, but mostly it's pretty even keel."

Memphis shook his head. "Occasional downsides? I'm surprised they even let you out anymore, the amount of repentance you rack up on a regular basis. "

Roderich laughed at that, "True, very true. I tend to wait between the necessity for penance when I can. Or see if I can find something that doesn't require penance in the meantime."

Roderich smirked a bit, "Perhaps, but as long as I pay penance for it I can get away with it, an I haven't done anything to go any further than that so..."

The smaller demon snorted again. "Yeah huh. It's astounding to me what you angels can get away with... so, how long since the last time you had to go pay your dues?"

"Well, I finished my last set about a year ago. I might be looking at another round soon, but I'm not certain yet." He replied, leaning back.

Memphis' brows arched, more comfortable now they were on a topic not involving him or his choice. "Less than a year and you're already looking for more trouble?"

Memphis returned the glance, a brow arched. "Sounds sickeningly sweet," he remarked, taking a long breath of smoke. "Though, that seems to have been your type."

"My type?" Memphis asked, brows rising and free hand going to his chest again. He considered for a moment and shrugged. "I suppose that means having a type. Not really sure I do, and eventually everyone just starts blurring together over thousands of years."

"And that is a difference there as well. Some of them are faint memories, but I remember most of them. At least over the last several centuries." Roderich replied, nodding very slightly.
